Active in his local community, he serves as a trustee of the Yellow Springs Dharma Center, an organization whose activities involve both students and Yellow Springs residents. In 1987, he founded Insight Travel, an educationally oriented company that focuses on pilgrimage in Asia. He served as a consultant for the BBC documentary, “In the Footsteps of the Buddha.”
Recently he collaborated on Living This Life Fully: Stories and Teachings of Munindra, a biography of Anagarika Munindra, who was an important Vipassana meditation teacher during the 20th century. Robert’s approach to teaching emphasizes the use of anthropological methods, and he is particularly interested in the social and institutional impact of Buddhism as it interacts with American culture.
