Schedule and Daily Life

Brazilian Ecosystems  is a  FALL  semester program, running from approximately early September to early December.

Sample Schedule

Orientation at the Hummingbird Mountain Reserve

  • Atlantic Forest ecology: mammals birds, amphibians, plant community ecology, ethnobotany, conservation policy, human-wildlife conflicts, role of cultural traditions in sustainable resource management.
  • Hummingbird Mountain Reserve, Morretes – Paraná
  • Intensive Portuguese language instruction, Brazilian culture

Curitiba-Paraná

  • Mangrove, estuary and intertidal zone ecology, ecology and conservation of sea birds, dolphins, and sea turtles, marine wildlife rehabilitation

Marine Research Center, Pontal do Sul – Paraná

  • Neotropical savanna ecology, role of non-governmental organizations in biodiversity conservation, environmental laws and policy, sustainable development

Brasília, D.F. (Federal District)

  • Amazonian rainforest ecology, experimental design, data collection and analysis, freshwater stream ecology and research methods

Ducke Reserve, Manaus-Pará

  • Wetland amphibians, reptiles and insects, general wetland ecology, independent wildlife observation

Pantanal of Poconé, Mato Grosso

  • Four-week Field Internship, locations vary

Curitiba-Paraná

  • Final Program Week: Course assignments due, internship presentations, final exam, policy debates
