Accommodations and Meals
On the Globalization and Community Responses in Argentina program, students live in homestays with an Argentine family in Bariloche, where they will daily develop their language practice and build long-lasting cultural bonds. For full cultural and language immersion, students will not be housed with other Americans. Most host families live in or near the Belgrano neighborhood, a short distance from the Universidad FASTA, and just uphill from downtown and Lake Nahuel Huapi beaches (the entire city rises vertically from the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, and is quite walkable, although some of the steep streets give quite a workout!).
Host families will provide breakfast and dinner, and students will receive a stipend to cover their lunches. Breakfasts in Argentina typically consist of coffee or mate (a traditional tea, widely drunk throughout Argentina), toast with jam or dulce de leche (a caramel-like spread), and/or yogurt with cereal. Dinner is eaten late, usually 9 or 10pm, and may consist of pasta, pizza, pastel de papa (Shepard’s Pie), chicken, lamb or beef. Although there is plenty of access to fresh fruits and vegetables in Bariloche, most Argentinians eat meat. Please discuss any dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, etc.) with AEA, so that we may best accommodate these needs.
