International Travel

As you prepare to go abroad, it is important to review safety basics around international travel. Whether or not you have previous international travel experience, below is an overview of important tips to keep in mind. Prior to departure on an AEA program, students will receive detailed information packets covering these topics, among others, in depth.

Airport Safety

For up-to-date information regarding traveling with liquids, required forms of identification, and countless other rules and regulations for airport travel, check the Transportation Security Administration website for the most current regulations. Following these regulations will make your trip through airport security much smoother and will help avoid delays. If you are selected for an in-depth security screening, such as an inspection of luggage or search, remain calm and follow all directions given by airport security. If you have followed the rules for what you are allowed to bring on the plane, you should not have any difficulties.

All medications (prescription and over the counter) should be carried in their original labeled bottles/boxes. Prescription medications should include the participant’s full, legal name, and a copy of the original prescription should be carried separately.

It is important not to leave your bags unattended for any reason. While it can be an inconvenience to lug around a carry-on every time you need to get a drink or use the restroom, it is important to always bring your bag with you. Not only could someone take your luggage or put something hazardous in it, they could report it as unattended and your bag could be confiscated. To make toting around your luggage less of a hassle, try to pack it as lightly as possible. For a carry-on, you really only need a change of clothes, a toothbrush, and a book to read on the plane.

Keep all valuables such as passports, credit cards, cash, etc. on your person while you travel. We recommend a traveler’s pouch or interior pocket, where items are less likely to accidentally fall out or get stolen.

General Travel Safety

Always while traveling, it is important to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. Keep in mind, some AEA programs include travel by train, bus or other forms of transportation within or between countries abroad. Both packing lightly and keeping your luggage with you at all times will be helpful.

Your cross-cultural experience will begin the moment you begin to travel to the program site. You will find cultural differences in airports, train, and bus stations abroad, and in many places travelers are offered wanted—and unwanted—assistance, services, or souvenirs. It may feel at times overwhelming, but will be an extension of the cultural adjustments that you will make throughout your time abroad. AEA will provide more detailed and helpful, country-specific travel tips before you go.
