Training

As a Naturalist intern, you will participate in an intensive, three-week training program to introduce you to the Glen trails, and hike topics. Naturalists are given the tools and information needed to teach a variety of natural history and ecology hikes, and then given the freedom to develop his/her own teaching style throughout the program. Additional training takes place on most Mondays in natural history, outdoor teaching methodologies, exposure to career options, professional growth as Naturalists, and individual academic days. Staff and guest speakers will conduct training, with the possibility of field trips during the term.

Naturalists also receive training on working with birds of prey at the Glen Helen Raptor Center. Interns provide daily care for the birds in exchange for learning how to handle an owl or falcon for use in educational programs.

Academics

Interns receive 12 undergraduate or 10 graduate credits during the term at Glen Helen.  Credits are currently issued through Antioch University.  An additional 12 or 10 credits may be earned during a second semester through continuation in the Admin program.  Courses are taught through hands-on seminars and through real-life practice at the Outdoor Education Center.   Transfer of credits is on the responsibility of the intern.
