Antioch University Los Angeles Faculty Member Receives Fulbright Award

Antioch University Los Angeles is proud to announce that Education program chair J. Cynthia McDermott, Ed.D. has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to do research in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 2010/2011 academic year, according to the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Dr. McDermott will be teaching courses designed to demonstrate civic skills and practices, create “train the trainer” models to help strengthen existing expertise in democratic processes, and work in partnership with in-country participants to develop curriculum and encourage writing related to civic engagement.

“My goal throughout my career has been to encourage educators to create democratic classrooms which support civic engagement” adds Dr. McDermott. “Democratic teaching processes are the heart of civic education, which has as its goal to teach learning activities that encourage involvement in the community in order to enhance the quality of civic life.”

Dr. McDermott is one of approximately 1,100 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.
