Antioch University to Honor Lillian Pierson Lovelace with Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters

CULVER CITY, CA – Antioch University has announced that the Antioch University Board of Trustees voted to honor Trustee Emeritus Lillian Pierson Lovelace with an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters (DHL). The award will be presented during Antioch University Los Angeles’ 36th Annual Commencement ceremony, scheduled to be held on June 20, 2008 at Royce Hall in Los Angeles, California.
Lillian Pierson Lovelace attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio and later graduated with her Bachelor’s degree from Antioch University Southern California in 1989. A highly respected philanthropist and community volunteer, Mrs. Lovelace has served as Trustee Emerita since 2002, and was a member of the Antioch University Board of Trustees from 1989 – 2002. “Lillian Pierson Lovelace lives the Antioch mission through her many years of service to the community, her wise counsel, and philanthropic support,” said Dr. Toni Murdock, Antioch University Chancellor. “It will be a great privilege for me to present Lillian with her honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters on the occasion of Antioch University Los Angeles’ Commencement ceremony.”
Mrs. Lovelace, along with her husband Jon, have actively served their community through their involvement with organizations such as the Board of Governors of Idyllwild Arts Foundation, the governing boards of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and the Georgia O’Keefe Museum, the foundation of the University of California at Santa Barbara, the Capital Group Foundation, the Brain Mapping Research Organization at UCLA, and as Chair of the Pierson-Lovelace Foundation, a charitable support organization. The Lovelace family split their time between Santa Barbara and Beverly Hills, California. Mrs. Lovelace has also been involved with the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Foundation for Santa Barbara City College, the Arts Council, Camerata Pacifica, Casa Serena, the League of Women Voters, Phoenix of Santa Barbara, and the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. “Lillian serves as a role model to all of our students, demonstrating what Antioch’s role is in society and making the world a better place” added Chancellor Murdock. “Her contributions to Antioch University have been substantial, making it appropriate and fitting that her role in leading Antioch be recognized.”
Mrs. Lillian Pierson Lovelace will receive her honorary Doctorate on Friday, June 20th at Royce Hall. Additionally, she will be joined by 150 other Antioch University Los Angeles graduates who will be receiving their own undergraduate or graduate degrees during the ceremony. The ceremony will be presided over by Dr. Neal King, President of Antioch University Los Angeles. Chancellor Toni Murdock, Ph.D. will be in attendance to award the honorary degree.
