YELLOW SPRINGS, OHIO – Emily McCord, a news reporter at WYSO public radio, has been named an “NPR Fellow” for 2009 – 2010. She will take part in the “NPR News Economic Training Project” with a group of reporters from around the country at NPR West, in Culver City, California, from June 22 – 26. They will receive specialized training aimed at expanding and deepening business and economics reporting across all of public media.
NPR received more than 100 applications for twenty-two positions. “We had a very difficult time picking the participants,” says NPR News Director Ellen Weiss . “With the economy the biggest story of the day, we’re eager to see great economic coverage come out of this project – locally, nationally and online.”
McCord’s honor comes at an opportune time for WYSO, as it launches a programming initiative called “My Home: Facing the Mortgage Crisis,” a series of informational spots, call-in programs and feature reports by McCord and the entire WYSO news staff, which includes Jerry Kenney, Juliet Fromholt and project manager, Aileen LeBlanc.
“Mortgage foreclosure is a critical problem in the Miami Valley,” says WYSO manger Neenah Ellis, “and WYSO will bring information to our listeners about where to get reliable help if they find themselves in trouble. We have joined with many community partners, to provide reliable information.”
McCord is the local host of “All Things Considered,” NPR’s flagship news program, which airs on WYSO from 4-630 Monday through Friday and weekends at 5 pm. Her l news reports are also heard on “Morning Edition” daily from 5:00 – 9:00 am. She came to WYSO from public radio station WFIU in Bloomington, Indiana in 2007.
The NPR Fellows program and the mortgage foreclosure reporting project are both funded by the Corportation for Public Broadcasting. WYSO’s media partner for the foreclosure series is ThinkTV.
