A note to all cohort students: The majority of your coursework, especially in your first year, will be taken with your cohort at the designated time and location. However, a few core classes, electives, and specialization courses will need to be taken outside of the regular cohort schedule.
General Cohort Information
A cohort is a group of students who enter their program at a fixed time (their first quarter) and follow a set schedule of classes throughout their program (see sample schedule below). Students enroll full-time for eight consecutive quarters of study, taking all required courses in a preset sequence over the two-year period. Students in a cohort take all courses together.
Students selecting this option should realize that in order to stay in the One-Day-A-Week program, they must continue at full-time status. If they take a Leave of Absence or drop to half-time, they must shift from the Cohort/One-Day to the regular/”flex” schedule program. They must fill out a Change of Program form with Student Services (2nd floor) if leaving the cohort group.
Students may leave the cohort if they choose; however, joining a cohort later than the first quarter can be complicated as students must make sure (a) the cohort’s current courses are not redundant to them and (b) they have not already taken courses the cohort will take in the future.
Program Planning
- Weekday cohort class times (in the case of Wednesday or Thursday cohorts, offered in WINTER only, on an alternating schedule) are at 10 am, 1 pm, and 4 pm.
- Saturday cohort classes are at 9 am, 12:30 pm and 3:15 pm.
- Downtown cohort class days vary, and are usually Mondays through Thursdays at 6:30 pm (with an additional online course at times.) Please see this link for further information about Downtown.
Students must also attend a required class in their 5th quarter that will take place over two days (either two Fridays, two Saturdays OR two Sundays), as well as one online course.
In addition, each student must complete 9 units of clinical training, a minimum of two quarters of weekly personal psychotherapy, and 17 additional units either towards a specialization OR towards their general elective requirement. In the case of the general specialization, these units may consist of elective courses, elective workshops, or additional traineeship units. All specialization students must fulfill the course requirements for their specialization using the Tracking Sheet.
The majority of your coursework, especially in your first year, will be taken with your cohort at the designated time and location. However, in your 5th through 8th quarters, a few core classes, traineeship, electives, and specialization courses will need to be taken outside of the regular cohort schedule as is most convenient, on evenings, weekends, or weekdays as is feasible.
