Ohio Poet Laureate Dave Lucas Visits Antioch University Midwest

Dave Lucas, Ohio’s Poet Laureate, visited Antioch University Midwest reading his poetry and writing. Following the reading, Lucas answered audience questions and shared his ideas of poetry being democratic and natural. He said that often the words we say can be poetic —that poetry doesn’t necessarily need to be lofty, that it is found in the ordinary and every day.

Lucas was appointed the second Poet Laureate of the State of Ohio in 2018. He was recommended for the two-year position after a statewide nominating process by the Ohio Poet Laureate Selection Committee. He is the author of Weather (VQR/Georgia, 2011) which received the 2012 Ohioana Book Award for Poetry. A co-founder of Cleveland Book Week and Brews + Prose at Market Garden Brewery, Lucas lives in Cleveland, where he was born and raised.

Around 30 people, including local poets, attended the event, which was free and open to the public. The evening concluded with a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception, which allowed attendees to continue conversations with the Ohio Poet Laureate.
