Those words have been emblematic of the Antiochian spirit since its inception, and they are even more so today as the world faces the perils of a deadly pandemic. COVID-19 has disrupted every aspect of our lives and will continue to do so for many months to come. Higher education has been particularly hard-hit, including Antioch University. Our campus facilities have been closed. We have transitioned all of our programs to remote modalities, and we have asked all employees to work from home. It is unclear when this will end, how our country will reopen, and what this will mean for higher education and Antioch specifically. The good news is –
We Made The Transition.
With the hard work of all faculty and staff, we made the transition. We have moved almost 1000 classes and several on-site residencies to highly engaging, synchronous, remote modalities using a combination of Zoom and Sakai. Students are still able to meet in class with their faculty and fellow students from the safety of their homes. Antioch University has kept our students, faculty, and staff safe and closed our campuses ahead of any local or state orders to do so. We’ve done that in a way that continues our high quality, high touch pedagogy, whether in psychology, counseling, education, environmental studies, creative writing, management, leadership and change, or undergraduate studies. But –
Our Students Need Your Help.
As the economic recession expands, many of our students have been laid off, furloughed, or suffered a loss of income. Many have school-age children and are left with no daycare and the obligation to home school their children. There is no model for predicting the impact of these stresses on our enrollment, but even minor declines could be devastating.
Antioch University has committed $100,000 in emergency funds for students who are adversely affected by COVID-19, but we would like to do much more. We have also secured CARES funding from the federal government to help with the worst impacts on our students. That said, it isn’t enough. I know some of you, our alumni and friends, are also struggling with the uncertainties. And you may be facing financial losses as well. But, I hope the vast majority are finding your footing and moving forward despite the challenges. And to you I ask, can you help?
