Collaboration in Inclusive Environments: Meeting the Needs of Students with Disabilities in General Education

Antioch University and Santa Barbara County SELPA present a special symposium and workshop that will provide participants with the knowledge and skills on how to effectively collaborate to meet the needs of students in special education in the general education classroom.

This symposium is ideal for: general education teachers, special education teachers, teacher candidates, students in teaching/education programs, parents, school psychologists, and school administrators. Symposium attendees will receive: Workshops with expert guest speakers, free breakfast and lunch, as well as a free resource book by the speaker.

  • 9:00 – 10:00 am: Keynote: Embracing Inclusive Education through Personalization and Collaboration, Dr. Wendy Murawski
  • 10:15 – 11:45am: Session 1. Choose from:
    • A) The Nuts and Bolts of Co-Teaching, Dr. Wendy Murawski
    • B) Why Inclusion: What the Research Tells Us with facilitated discussion by Dr. Jarice Butterfield and Stacy Tolkin
  • 11:45 – 12:45pm: Lunch
  • 12:45 – 2:15pm: Session 2. Choose from:

Keynotes & Guests

Dr. Wendy Murawski is the Executive Director and Eisner Endowed Chair for the Center for Teaching and Learning at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), where she is also a full professor in the Department of Special Education. She is the national Past President of the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and an internationally known speaker and author. She has published extensively, to include nine books and numerous peer-reviewed articles. Dr. Murawski has won many awards for her teaching, research and publications, to include Teacher Educator of the Year in the state of California. Dr. Murawski runs her own educational consulting company, 2 TEACH LLC, which employs multiple experts on inclusion, co-teaching, differentiation, common core standards, and other educational topics. Wendy is known for the high energy, humor, content and personal experiences she brings to each of her presentations.

Dr. Jarice Butterfield is the Santa Barbara County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Director. She is current adjunct faculty in the graduate education programs at Antioch University Santa Barbara. Jarice has worked as a special educator and administrator in many capacities and at all grade levels. She has vast training and experience in special education, traumatic brain injury, and English language development. She provides staff development nationally and in the state of California on meeting the needs of English learners with disabilities and Traumatic Brain Injury. She drafted the handbook titled Meeting the Needs of English Learners with Disabilities and “Linguistically Appropriate IEP Goal Bank” for the State SELPA Directors’ Association and SEIS. She also co-authored the the LRP book titled English Language Learners With Disabilities: A Guide for Education Administrators. Jarice currently serves as the Chair Person to the State SELPA Directors’ Association Ad Hoc English Learner Committee and liaison to the CDE English Language Learner Division.
