Dismantling White Supremacy in a Multiracial World: What White Folks Can Do
October 22, 2020 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm EDT
Join Antioch University Distinguished Scholar Stephen Brookfield, PhD
White supremacy is the idea that white people, because of their supposedly higher levels of innate intelligence and their ability to think logically, calmly and objectively, should naturally be in positions of power and authority to make decisions for everyone else. This idea underscores the reality of white structural racism. It’s the ideological glue that legitimizes racist policies and practices across employment, housing, health care, education and incarceration.
This session begins by exploring how the myth of white supremacy remains widespread and pervasive, particularly amongst ‘good white people’ (Sullivan, 2014) who think of themselves as moral and compassionate individuals who don’t see color. What can white educators, leaders and activists do to unearth and challenge this myth? How is it that so many white attempts at allyship backfire? What is the role of multiracial leadership and when are racial affinity groups appropriate?
In this interactive session, Dr. Stephen Brookfield draws on his two most recent books – Teaching Race (2019) and Becoming a White Antiracist (2021) – to explore these and other questions.
