Join us on Wednesday, October 25th, 2017, for a convening focused on the Monadnock Region’s Living Wage Initiative. This interactive program will take place at the Antioch University New England campus in Keene, New Hampshire. Scroll down to see the day’s agenda.
Presenters will share lessons learned from businesses participating in voluntary living wage commitments, including benefits, challenges, and facilitators and innovative implementation models. The program will situate the Monadnock Region’s income and health dimensions within the context of the nationwide County Healthy Rankings and Roadmaps initiative supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The Monadnock Region’s Living Wage initiative is facilitated by Healthy Monadnock 2020 and is comprised of business, faith, social service, government, non-profit, and education leaders. The program aims to meet healthy living goals throughout the region, including access to health care, healthy eating, educational attainment, and increased income.
The calculator developed by the Monadnock Living Wage Working Group defines a Living Wage as $15 an hour. While many Monadnock Region employers provide employees with wage/benefits packages that meet this standard, 45% of New Hampshire’s workers make less than $15 an hour. Research shows that when workers are paid a living wage of $15 an hour, then economic development, personal health, and employee productivity are enhanced.
Local Monadnock Region businesses and institutions have voluntarily adopted the Living Wage initiative, including W.S Badger & Co., Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce, the Insurance Source, Tree Free Greetings, and Antioch University New England.

David is a Co-Founder and the General Manager of 7th Settlement Brewery, LLC in Dover, NH. He leads a team of over 45 employees in a craft brewery and farm to table restaurant. Since opening, 7th Settlement has won a Gold Medal at the 2015 GABF (the largest beer competition in the world), named Small Business of the Year by the Greater Dover Area Chamber of Commerce in 2016, Best New Restaurant by New Hampshire Magazine in 2014, and the NH Employment Leadership Award in 2017.
David has always focused on the community economy with his own small businesses and working with non-profits as Director at Seacoast Local and a founding board member of Dover Listens. An entrepreneur at heart he has helped several other entrepreneurs start and succeed through his activities with Chamber of Commerce and these non-profits as well as a current lecturer for the Paul College of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire.
David earned a Master’s in Business Administration, in Organizational and Environmental Sustainability from Antioch New England in 2011 and a BS in Kinesiology: Outdoor Education from the University of New Hampshire in 2003.
Dr. Ann Driscoll teaches in the MBA in Sustainability program at AUNE and is the Interim Academic Dean and Chief Student Services Officer for the New England campus. She has consulted for years in multiple sectors around capacity building and organizational development.
Dr. Taryn E. Fisher is a member of AUNE’s core faculty and is the director of its MBA in Sustainability Program, She transitioned to academia after a twenty year career in the corporate sector as a supply chain management executive for The Gillette Company, Procter & Gamble, and Fidelity Investments. As a scholar-practicioner, Taryn is actively engaged in the Ecovation Hub economic development initiative, the Global B Corp Academic Community, and the Keene Arts & Culture Working Group.
Emily is the Director of Administration and Strategic Planning at Badger, a family owned and family friendly business built around healthy living in the workplace and the community. She has an extensive background in Human Resources (PHR) and a Masters Degree in Organization and Management from Antioch New England University. She has served on the boards of Harrisville Children’s Center and Monadnock Family Services and is a recent graduate of Leadership Monadnock through the Keene Chamber of Commerce.
Ali is a Community Coach at County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, a collaboration of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. Ali’s role is to provide guidance to diverse teams working together to adopt programs, policies, systems, and environmental changes to create healthier places to live, learn, work, and play. She is an accomplished collaborator who focuses on creating strategic partnerships to improve the communities with which she interacts. Ali received a Bachelor of Arts in Public and Urban Affairs and a Master in Public and International Affairs from Virginia Tech.
Shawn V. LaFrance is Vice President for Population Health and Health System Integration at the Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth Hitchcock in Keene NH. His role is to advance community health and clinical integration in the Monadnock region. He is the former Executive Director of the Foundation for Healthy Communities, where he developed the Foundation into a statewide organization to improve health and health care. His career has included work in advocacy, philanthropy and public health in state and local government in New York City and New Hampshire. Mr. LaFrance’s community service includes serving on several state and community boards. In 2017, he received the Ira Byock & Yvonne Corbeil Award from the NH Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Wellness Visionary Award from the Capital Area Wellness Coalition. In 2011, he was presented the Citizen of the Year award from the NH Pediatric Society. Mr. LaFrance was ordained a Deacon in the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire in 2017. He received his B.S. degree from the University of New Hampshire and a Masters in Public Health and M.S. in Urban Planning from Columbia University.
Shannon has worked at the Boston Public Health Commission for over seven years and is currently a Research Associate in the Research and Evaluation Office. She is a member of BPHC’s Anti-Racism Advisory Committee and holds a master’s degree from Northeastern University.
Margaret Reid is a registered nurse and with a master’s in public administration and has been with the Boston Public Health Commission for 18 years. Ms. Reid currently directs BPHC’s Office of Health Equity and is a member of the Commission’s Senior Leadership Team. Prior to this, she directed the Division of Healthy Homes and Community Supports, which included tobacco, asthma, oral health and injury prevention and control.
Linda Rubin, MS is Director of Strategy and Capacity Development in the Center for Population Health at Cheshire Medical Center, a Dartmouth-Hitchcock affiliate in Keene, New Hampshire. Ms. Rubin joined Cheshire Medical in 2010 taking the lead role in facilitating the collective impact, health improvement initiative to make the Monadnock Region (101,000 pop) the healthiest community in the nation. She works to build the community’s capacity and engagement to transform neighborhoods, towns, schools, businesses and more into environments where better health flourishes for everyone.
Nikki Sauber has worked at Monadnock United Way (MUW) since 2015, first serving as Administrative Assistant and now as an Impact Coordinator. She supports local human service non-profits to work collectively to address the region’s most challenging social issues. Outside of her work at MUW, Nikki serves as the President of the Keene Young Professionals Network and a lead organizer of the annual TEDxKeene event. Nikki received her MS in Environmental Studies, with a concentration in Advocacy for Social Justice & Sustainability, from Antioch University New England in 2014. Nikki and her dog, Maple, are grateful to live, work and play in such a collaborative community.
Katie Schwerin is a co-owner and the COO at the W.S. Badger Company in Gilsum, NH. In addition to being a key member of Badger’s leadership team, Katie is responsible for spearheading many of the company’s unique benefits, from babies at work and the Calendula Garden Childcare Center (which provides subsidized and Waldorf-inspired childcare for the children of Badger employees), to the Ecology Center and free and organic lunches enjoyed daily by all employees. Katie also focuses on prioritizing Badger’s certification as a B Corp, a status that adds transparency to the company’s social and environmental business practices.
Katie has been active in the community for many years and is currently serving as co-chair of the Business Ambassadors for Impact Monadnock, a community-led nonprofit organization focused on improving the lives of children in the region ages zero to five. She also finds the time to teach economics and entrepreneurship at a local private high school.
As Director of the Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy, Amanda is working to build momentum for policies that help New Hampshire people make ends meet and be there for their families when they need to be. Prior to joining Civix Strategy Group, Amanda co-founded the Environmental Health Strategy Center – a public health advocacy organization based in Maine _„î and the Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine, a coalition working to phase out use of persistent chemicals from consumer products in favor of safer alternatives.
Phil Sletten is a policy analyst for NHFPI. He previously served for three years as a performance auditor for the New Hampshire Office of Legislative Budget Assistant, where he provided analysis on a wide range of state agency operations. Phil has a Bachelor of Arts in political science and policy studies from Grinnell College, located in Grinnell, Iowa, and a Master of Public Affairs from the University of Wisconsin _„_ Madison, with emphases on tax, economic, and environmental policy.
Steve Silverstein, a longtime Keene resident, started Tree-Free Greetings, an eco-friendly alternative to traditional greeting cards and stationery products, as a division of The Mountain in 1999 and bought the company in 2006. Originally from Chatham, NJ, Steve studied liberal arts at Oberlin College and, after various international adventures, completed his undergrad studies at Hampshire College. Following that, Steve earned a graduate degree in management from Antioch University New England. Today, Steve and his wife Melinda have three children and continue to travel extensively.
Phil Suter is currently the President/CEO of the Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce. Formerly he was the Executive Director of the Regional Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing, bringing businesses, educational institutions and government officials together to promote manufacturing and technology workforces. Phil’s career includes Adjunct Professor of Management at the University of New Hampshire; a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State; the Deputy Director of National Visa Center; an International Affairs Officer for the Office of Israel and Arab-Israeli Affairs and the Political-Military Officer for the Office of Security/Peacekeeping Operation in Washington, DC. He was also a Consular Officer for the Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy, in the Philippines and an Administrative Officer for the US Embassy in Belize. Phil has a B.A. in Political Science & International Development from Colorado College and an MBA from the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire.
Michelle Veasey is the Executive Director of New Hampshire Businesses for Social Responsibility, a statewide member-based organization that fosters environmentally and socially responsible business in New Hampshire. As NHBSR’s ED, Michelle leads the organization in providing educational resources on corporate social responsibility, through the latest in theory and best practices and demonstrated by local business leaders. Michelle has spent the past fourteen years focusing on the value of sustainable business practices within the New Hampshire business community. Prior to joining NHBSR, she created and managed the New Hampshire Sustainable Lodging & Restaurant Program, which certified almost one hundred hospitality businesses across the state in their sustainable business efforts. Prior to her work in sustainability, she spent twenty years in the high tech industry as software designer and developer. Michelle received a B.S. in Finance from the University of Denver and a M.A. in Environmental Education from the University of New Hampshire. She has served on numerous community-based organizations and currently serves as the Chair of Atkinson’s Energy Commission and is an appointed member of the Volunteer NH Board.
