Title: The Role of Emotional Overcontrol in the Acceptance of Counselor Training Feedback

Abstract:Feedback is an essential component of counselor training, making it crucial that students receive and utilize this information effectively. Past research has focused on helping instructors and supervisors to deliver feedback in acceptable ways, emphasizing the responsibility of the feedback-giver to ensure that the information is received by the recipient. This research explored the possibility that individual student traits might affect the efficacy of feedback interactions, thereby reframing the responsibility for effective feedback exchanges as a mutual collaboration between instructors and students. Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy and the concept of emotional overcontrol were used as a lens for exploring the possible correlation between measures of overcontrol and difficulty with accepting feedback within counselor training programs. A quantitative research design was utilized to survey master’s level counseling students (n = 133) about the overcontrolled trait and feedback receptivity within the classroom and supervisory settings. Results indicated that the trait of emotional overcontrol related significantly to some elements of feedback receptivity. Implications of these findings will be discussed, including specific recommendations for working with overcontrolled students in counselor training programs.
