Antioch University PhD in Leadership and Change Ceremony Graduates Today’s Leaders and Confers Honorary Degree

Yellow Springs, OH—The PhD in Leadership and Change program at Antioch University held its 2013 commencement ceremony, at which 23 graduates from across the country officially earned the right to call themselves “Doctor.” The ceremony took place at the Antioch University Midwest campus’ PNC Auditorium on Saturday, August 3, at 9:00 a.m. and featured remarks from members of the university’s Board of Governors, as well as the presentation of an honorary degree to Arthur Zucker.

PhD commencement at Antioch UniversityThe low-residency format of Antioch University’s PhD in Leadership and Change (PhDLC) program created a geographically diverse pool that was the 2013 graduating class. Graduates this year came from 15 states and the Bahamas, all completing residencies over their years of study at various Antioch University campuses in places including Ohio, Southern California, Seattle, and New England. “Our program is characterized by an engaged and vibrant group of highly diverse scholar-practitioners, and this year’s graduates are no exception,” says, Laurien Alexandre, PhDLC Program Director. “These graduates represent various professions, regions, experiences and lifestyles, which we believe is essential in terms of learning about and leading change in our complex global world. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments”

Larry Stone, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors, addressed the graduates saying, “I am honored to be here in the presence of a group of elite learners and leaders. You have collectively committed thousands of hours to challenge yourselves in and out of the classroom in your effort to take your commitment to a higher level – a commitment to change, advocacy, leadership and social justice.”

In addition to the granting of degrees, Arthur J. Zucker of Raleigh, NC, was awarded an honorary University doctorate degree. This award is reserved for an individual whose work, achievements, commitments and/or philanthropic endeavors embody Antioch University values. “Arthur J. Zucker, who served on the Board for more than twelve years, and was its chairman for six of those years, has provided exemplary and steadfast leadership to the University through a period of extensive change,” said Howard Coleman, Chair of the Board of Governors. “It was during Art’s service as chairman that Antioch experienced some of its most challenging times in recent history. Art withstood the slings and arrows wielded by various constituencies. In the face of adversity, Art Zucker displayed grace, and earned the respect and admiration of his peers.”

The PhDLC will be hosting its East Coast Open Houses this September when anyone interested can explore the program and meet members of the PhDLC learning community. Dates and locations can be found on the website at www.antioch.edu/phd.
