New Alumna Dissertation Addresses the Lived Experience of African American Women and Their Bodies

Dr. Yolandé “Falami” DevoePhD in Leadership and Change alumna Dr. Yolandé “Falami” Devoe is a womanist scholar and arts- based educator with interdisciplinary interests at the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnography, and pedagogy. She has just published her dissertation entitled, In Pictures and Words: A Womanist Answer to Addressing the Lived Experience of African American Women ad Their Bodies – A Gumbo of Liberation and Healing.  Seeking to reveal the ways in which gender, race, and sexual orientation impact the lived experiences of African American women and their bodies, this study brings attention to and provides a more nuanced understanding of the historical and sociocultural ramifications of the Black female body. A certified Holistic Wellness coach, Dr. Devoe considers herself a Body Liberation Coach. She creates and curates spaces for Black women to express themselves authentically and to help make meaning of their lived experiences of their bodies. Learn more about her work here!
