Number of Positions: 3, One student will be focusing on the bird surveys and related data, while a second student will be focusing on the amphibian data and a third to work on audio files collected from field recordings, and detecting frog calls in these audio files.

Method to assess remote work: Supervisor will be in weekly communication with the students to monitor that the work is being completed. The supervisor will also be checking that the data is being collected and entered on a shared Google Sheet. The outcomes are complete bird, vegetation and amphibian datasets.

Job Description

  • Assistants are needed to help with ongoing research on wildlife-habitat relationships and the effects of forest management in the Northeastern USA.
  • The research assistants will work with AUNE faculty and collaborators at state or federal agencies and other universities.
  • Part of the work will entail conducting bird and vegetation surveys in sites, often where forest management and silviculture has occurred.
  • One assistant will conduct in-person bird point counts and point-intercept vegetation surveys at the points (15 hours/week).
  • Continued work during future semesters will entail organizing, managing, and analyzing the collected data (15 hours/week).
  • A second assistant will assist with listening to audio files collected from field recordings, and detecting frog calls in these audio files (12 hours/week).
  • Additional work will entail organizing and managing the frog data files (3 hours/week).

  • Interest in research that focuses on wildlife-habitat relationships in forests
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent data management and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Quantitative skills; ability to use Excel, and some familiarity and experience with using R and ArcGIS would be an added benefit
  • Federal work study funds
