Archetypal Grief in African American Women

This lecture/discussion will explore the psychological effects of child loss due to American slavery and institutionalized racism. The important significance of grief as intergeneration trauma is reviewed in terms of its direct connection to today’s racial violence against African American males. Our discussion will explore this circumstance through a Jungian lens, with deepening introspection into the archetype of slavery.

Fanny Brewster, PhD, MFA, is a Jungian analyst and writer in private practice. She is a lecturer and workshop presenter on Jungian related topics to a wide range of audiences. She will be an opening speaker at the International Association for Jungian Studies Conferences (IAJS) in Cape Town, South Africa, Summer, 2017. Dr. Brewster is a writer of poetry and nonfiction. Her nonfiction book African Americans and Jungian Psychology: Leaving the Shadowsis forthcoming by Routledge Publishing. She will be the featured poet in the forthcoming edition of Psychological Perspectives. She is a faculty member at Pacifica Graduate Institute, the Philadelphia Association of Jungian Analysts and the New York C.G. Jung Foundation
