This credential will allow you to continue on your dedicated path to becoming the teacher you’ve always aspired to be.
This multiple subject teaching credential prepares candidates to teach multiple subjects in classrooms to young people generally in grades K-6.
This credentialing program requires students to complete 75 quarter units, more units than other programs in the area. These units are used to determine your salary when you are hired for a teaching position, placing you higher up on the district’s salary schedule.
The Education Department is committed to exemplary practices and believes in an interdisciplinary approach. When you peruse our course offerings you will find the arts, music, physical education, social studies, language arts and reading, mathematics, science, conflict resolution, classroom management, child development, health, language development and the history of education. Students leave well prepared to teach the entire curriculum. This course of study has been approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
The Preliminary Multiple Subject is designed to be completed in a 12-month period and is full-time. Students attend classes on Monday and Thursday evenings from 4pm – 10pm, and participate in novice teaching for 2 quarters, or 20 weeks (10 weeks each quarter). Placements are made by the University and are sensitive to the geographic considerations of the student.
Candidates are placed in schools each of the 4 quarters, beginning with 10 hours of observation in the first quarter, followed by 10 days for the second quarter, and half-time field experiences for quarter 3, and full-time novice teaching for quarter 4. For those who are already school aides or teachers, your school might be a possible site for the novice teaching experience. Check with the Department for approval.

Before You Enroll
- Take and pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). This test is required of all students in teacher preparation programs in California. Please review the registration deadlines and test dates as soon as possible, as the CBEST is offered a limited number of times each year. For more information about the CBEST, visit cbest.nesinc.com.
- Register for or have taken the CSET prior to enrollment. Passing the CSET is not an admissions requirement.
- Please note that all students who earn a California Preliminary Multiple Subject Teaching Credential MUST pass both the CBEST and CSET.
How to Apply to Preliminary Multiple Subject or Education Specialist Mild/Moderate Credentials
- Complete the Online Application.
- Send in official transcript indicating Bachelor’s degree conferral from a regionally accredited college or university. Requested copy of official transcripts must be sent directly to the Admissions Office at Antioch University Los Angeles from the institution from which you received your accredited bachelor’s degree. A student copy of a transcript may be submitted with your application, but official transcripts are required upon admission.
Please submit all materials to: Admissions Office, 400 Corporate Pointe, Culver City, CA 90230. All application materials submitted become part of an applicant’s file and cannot be returned.
Admission to the education department will be determined by a personal one-on-one interview with the Department Chair which allows the applicant the opportunity to share their particular interests and qualifications.
