The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success (AVCSS) is the principal advisor to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and University Provost (VCAA) on all matters relating to student support and success. The AVCSS enhances the University’s commitment to student success, inclusion and diversity by providing leadership for the university-wide academic services to students and faculty that support student success, inclusion, and diversity. . The AVCSS serves as the Chief Retention Officer, Chief Student Services Officer, and the University’s Title IX and EEO Officer.
The AVCSS is responsible for assuring the quality and sufficiency of university academic and student support services. Specifically, this position is responsible for assuring the highest quality, university-wide student success services, including but not limited to writing support, disability support services, prior learning assessment, career planning, veterans services, and student records and registration. In addition, this position works in a collaborative fashion with academic administrators across the University and academic units to assure the high quality, seamless, provision of integrated student services functions.
The AVCSS must possess a deep commitment to fostering student success, educational access, and social justice. The position requires experience and skills in leading and serving teams and individuals who collaborate on the development, implementation, and evaluation of student success services to meet the needs of adult learners.
The AVCSS reports to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and University Provost and serves as a member of the Council of Chief Academic Officers as well as other committees and task forces as necessary.
Essential Job Functions:
- Student Success Leadership (80%)
- Provide leadership to ensure an integrated approach to academic support and student services across the University, with the goal of creating seamless student support and collaboration among support service providers.
- Serve as principal advisor to the VCAA to promote the development and implementation of student-related strategic plans.
- As Chief Retention Officer, provide leadership in researching, developing recommendations for, and implementing strategic planning objectives for student retention and success. Collaborate with the Associate Provosts to evaluate and improve academic and student services processes as well as establish training and professional development opportunities for student services staff.
- Lead the management and evaluation of the Integrated Student Services (ISS) functions within the University; establish and lead the ISS URG. Work closely with the Associate Provosts and URG members to establish University-wide standards and metrics for the provision of high quality student-centric student services and support across the University.
- With the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, establish and co-lead a Persistence and Completion Task Force to establish persistence and completion goals and assure appropriate retention mechanisms are in place to support goal achievement. Recommend and draft policies, and advocate for procedures related to student success.
- Oversee the provision of records and registration services to students by the University Registrar as well as the management and evaluation of the Office of the Registrar.
- Oversee the management of the disability support services (DSS) function of the University, through the supervision of Director of Student Services & Office of Disability Services, including policy development and implementation, best practices in service students with disabilities, professional development of DSS staff, and institutional risk management, as well as the functioning of the DSS URG.
- Oversee the management of the student conduct function of the University, through the supervision of the Director of Student Services & Office of Disability Services, including policy development and implementation, best practices in investigation and hearing practices, professional development of Chief Student Conduct Officers (CSCO), and institutional risk management as well as the functioning of the CSCO URG. Serve as the University’s Chief Student Services Officer (CSSO) in resolving issues involving student conduct, student grievances, and other matters.
- Oversee the management and evaluation of the Antioch University Virtual Writing Center and the Writers’ Exchange through the supervision of the Director of Writing Services.
- Oversee the management and evaluation of career planning services and prior learning assessment and the administration of the relevant third party contracts through the supervision of the assigned coordinator.
- Work with Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs to ensure library services address the needs of all students
- Lead the establishment, management, and evaluation of the Office of Veterans Affairs, to assure appropriate and equitable services to student veterans and military-connected students
- Establish and lead the Primary Designated School Officials (international student services) URG.
- Administration (20%)
- Coordinate the development, review, and revision of student-related University policies and procedures. Monitor state and federal guidelines and laws as they apply to student programs and services, and ensure compliance with the rules and regulations of appropriate federal, state and local agencies as well as University.
- Support the VCAA in the development, implementation, and monitoring of assigned areas of the Office of Academic Affairs budget.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Doctorate in student personnel administration, higher education administration, or closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education required
- Eight years of relevant experience in higher education student affairs (academic support services, student support services, disability support services, or student life and conduct), with progressively responsible positions as follows:
- Four full-time years (or equivalent) of successful higher education student affairs experience with adult and nontraditional students in an accredited institution of higher learning required
- Four full-time years (or equivalent) of successful administrative experience in an accredited institution of higher learning at the director level or above required
- Experience the provision of academic and student support service to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students (all three levels) required
- Experience in a multi-campus, non-traditional, learner-centered, higher educational environment preferred.

- Demonstrated ability to support the ongoing development of competent employees by providing orientation, training, performance coaching, mentoring, continuing education and professional development opportunities
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally required
- Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality
Hours of Employment:
This is a full-time position serving a national university. A work schedule will be established in consultation with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and University Provost.
May maintain a home office or have an office at one of the Antioch University campuses. Specific location will be established in consultation with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and University Provost.
While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit, stand, use hands and fingers, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Requires daily use of computer and other standard office equipment.
