The six-week initiative, held from May 15 to June 25, encouraged New Hampshire residents to reduce pollution and develop healthier lifestyles by using alternative transportation such as biking, walking, carpooling, and public transit for all their travel needs. AUNE Transportation Coordinator and Environmental Studies master’s candidate Jessica Sanford participated in a kick-off promotional event in Keene’s Railroad Square, one of a number of similar events held throughout the state, and also publicized the initiative on AUNE’s campus.
AUNE is launching a major initiative this academic year to encourage employees and students to reduce the carbon impact of their commuting, which collectively represents an estimated 75 percent of the campus’s overall carbon footprint. The initiative includes ramping up usage of AUNE’s Green Bikes and supporting enhanced ridesharing options for commuters.
Any participant who made at least six green trips during the promotional period was eligible to enter a random computerized drawing for nine prizes. According to the New Hampshire DOT, there were 155 registrants eligible for the drawing, including Abi, who commuted to the AUNE campus by bike during the Commute Green initiative. As the first-place selection, Abi has been awarded overnight accommodations for two at the Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods.
