Day of Service on January 17 to Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jonathan Daniels
The Support Group for Ethnic and Racial Diversity (SERD) at Antioch University New England reminds everyone to circle January 17th on the calendar, and join them for a Day of Service to honor the lives and spirits of civil rights activists Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jonathan Daniels.
Volunteers of all ages are needed to give back to the Keene community during the one-day event, which takes place this year on the 25th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday.
SERD is organizing the 2011 Day of Service in collaboration with the City of Keene Martin Luther King, Jr./Jonathan Daniels Committee and the Monadnock RSVP/Volunteer Center. Volunteers will be matched to appropriate service projects with Keene community groups and nonprofit organizations according to their abilities and interests.
“We’re dedicating one day of our lives to do service for others,” said Dr. Gargi Roysircar Sodowsky, clinical psychology professor and director of the Multicultural Center at AUNE.
“We’re generating community spirit, not as individuals but as a group, and using our talents and skills to help our neighbors,” she said.
Last year’s inaugural event proved highly successful. Seventy-one participants from all walks of life assisted numerous organizations including The Samaritans, Inc., Cheshire County Medical Center and the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Projects ranged from cleaning dairy stalls at Stonewall Farm, to visiting senior citizens at Prospect Place, to participating in a focus group for the Big Brother Big Sister organization.
For the 2011 Day of Service, SERD and its community partners hope to enlist 100 participants, including families with children. Organizers are also looking for a talented student to deliver an inspirational send-off speech or a local gospel singer for opening ceremonies. Additionally, SERD will host a workshop for the public titled, The Token Game, about power and privilege in society.
Volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, January 17 at the Keene Parks and Recreation Center at 312 Washington Street in Keene. In case of inclement weather, a snow date is scheduled at 8:00 a.m on Saturday, January 22.
