Come Help AUNE Get Community Gardens in Keene Going
The public is invited to join Keene Community Gardens Connections (CGC) for a final garden-building party at Harper Acres, one of two sites for new community gardens in town. The event will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at Harper Acres on Castle Street.
CGC comprises environmental studies faculty and students from Antioch University New England, and community organizations and individual members.
Party-goers will help put together five raised garden beds and plant some rhubarb. A finger-food potluck will be going on. If possible, please bring a small dish to share that doesn’t need to be refrigerated and can be eaten with hands. “If you aren’t able to bring something, no worries; your presence is much more important,” said CGC co-coordinator Libby Weiland.
At the end of April, CGC volunteers built and planted two raised gardens at the Harper Acres site. Sunday’s event will finish the building of garden beds. Construction of raised garden beds is also underway at the second CGC site at the Keene Recreation Center.
With the help of a private donation of $25,000 from the Rashti Foundation, CGC is developing community gardens at the two sites this summer. Its goal is to help local residents grow healthy and affordable food and provide education.

Directions to Harper Acres:
Harper Acres is located in Keene at the end of Castle Street, or at the back of Ashuelot River Park, just off the bike path.
From the road: Pass through the property until you get to the dead end. There will be a brick building on your left (this is actually the Big Brothers Big Sisters building, 168 Castle St.). Please park facing this building, as the spaces across the street are for residents.
From the bike path: Take the bike path through Ashuelot River Park; stay to the right (don’t go over the bridge) until you come to the back of a brick building surrounded by a wrought-iron fence. Turn off the path here. The party will be taking place across the parking lot, on the far side of several construction containers.
