New Writing Center at AUNE to Open Officially This Fall
The new Writing Center at AUNE is getting underway: Director Cindy Snow plans to have the peer-tutoring program functioning by fall.
The center is funded for fiscal years 2012 and 2013 by an Antioch University Chancellors’ grant. It will offer free peer tutoring, with flexible hours set by student demand. Students will also have access to one-on-one virtual tutoring, through Skype, or can be referred to the university-wide virtual writing center, available to students on all Antioch University campuses.
Since Snow started at AUNE in May, she has been visiting writing centers at other colleges and universities and meeting with AUNE faculty to ask how the center can be most useful.
The purpose of the Writing Center is not to “fix” students’ writing, Snow said. “The philosophy is to help support the students so they can become better writers, which is not the same as providing a quick fix,” she said. “Students will be encouraged to bring in specific questions, an idea or a draft of their papers for help.
“Another misperception is that the Writing Center exists only to help the neediest of students. I want to dispel that myth. Writers at all levels benefit from feedback.”
Eventually Snow would like to develop an on-line compendium of good writing practices that the faculty have devised, to make them available to everyone at AUNE.
Snow began her career as a teacher and ran a peer-tutoring program. She worked for the United Methodist Church on development projects and people-to-people exchange programs. Later, she taught writing at community colleges. She worked as an editor for the Massachusetts Charter Public School Association and led a study of high-performing urban schools. She now teaches writing part-time at area colleges.
Snow hopes a physical space for the Writing Center, which is based in the AUNE library, will be set up by fall. Meanwhile, contact her by email or come by to introduce yourself. She is at AUNE on Tuesdays and one other day of the week which is flexible.
