The Great, the Good and the Rotten: School Composting Programs
Jessica Skinner, MS ’10, a former solid waste coordinator at AUNE, will talk about school composting programs, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Friday, November 18, in the Community Room. Her talk is a Carbon Counts: You Can Too! event.
Skinner, co-founder ofa local food program of Seacoast Local, an affiliate of Business Alliance for Local Living Economies, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, will discuss the what, why and how of school composting programs in an interactive presentation. She will discuss the science and practice of compost, as well as how to start and maintain a successful school composting program both at AUNE and elsewhere.
While getting her degree in environmental studies at AUNE, Skinner organized the creation of the Edible Garden and developed the AUNE solid waste coordination program. She has also co-authored a Farm Education Toolkit and acted as a curriculum adviser for the National Career Clusters Framework. She is dedicated to engaging students and community members of all ages in learning about good food and sustainable food systems.
