Beratan to Speak on Local Food Systems September 7
Kathi Beratan, research assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, will speak on “Expansion of Local Food Systems as a Potential Catalyst for Increasing Community Resilience in Disadvantaged Rural Regions” at 11 a.m., Friday, September 7.
Beratan has more than a decade of experience in the field of sustainability science; her background is in sedimentary tectonics and remote sensing. The focus of her research is methods for solving “wicked problems”†challenges that emerge from complex social-ecological systems. She is exploring the human dynamics of decision-making in the public sector and how effective design of information and interactive processes can facilitate cooperative inquiry and coordinated decision-making.
Beratan’s talk is the first in the Environmental Studies Colloquium Speaker Series this fall.
