Learn to Cook Local Foods, with AUNE Student
Michael Hightower, an Antioch University New England (AUNE) master’s degree student, is leading a project to help people learn to cook fresh, local foods. As an intern with Cheshire County Conservation District, Michael will host Get Fresh free, hands-on cooking classes, on Saturdays this fall in Keene. Morning and afternoon classes are offered to fit your schedule.
•The Savvy Shopper: Keene Farmers Market and Monadnock Food Co-op Tour. 10 a.m.-noon. Location: Keene Farmers Market, Gilbo Avenue.
• Real Food for Real People: Simple money-saving, meal-stretching strategies, as well as tried and true techniques. 3-5 p.m. Location: The Community Kitchen, 37 Mechanic Street.
•Perfect Pairings: Roast chicken dinner and classic flavor combinations that build confidence and invite improvisation.10 a.m.-noon and 3-5 p.m. Location: The Community Kitchen, 37 Mechanic Street.
•In Hot Water: Create kitchen staples, including homemade broths, soups, pastas, grains, and beans. 10 a.m.-noon and 3-5 p.m. Location: The Community Kitchen, 37 Mechanic Street.
•Bowls to Warm Hearts and Souls: Seasonal favorites to take the chill off, including: Spicy West African Peanut Soup, Chipotle-Pumpkin-Black Bean Chili and Southern cornbread. 10 a.m.-noon and 3-5 p.m. Location: The Community Kitchen, 37 Mechanic Street.
•The Pie is the Limit: Stress-free steps to yummy pies and perfect crust, just in time for the holidays. 10 a.m.-noon and 3-5 p.m. Location: The Community Kitchen, 37 Mechanic Street.
The classes are open to everyone, but space is limited. Customers of the Community Garden Connections garden sites and The Community Kitchen will be given priority.
The project is made possible through grant funds awarded to the Cheshire County Conservation District from the USDA’s Farmers Market Promotion Program, administered by the County of Cheshire.
Michael is co-coordinator of Keene Community Gardens Connections and a master’s degree student in the Environmental Education concentration of AUNE’s Department of Environmental Studies.
