Two More AUNE Courses in Nature-Based Early Childhood Education Coming Up
Two more courses in the Nature-Based Early Childhood Education program series at Antioch University New England (AUNE) are scheduled over the next few weeks.
Landscape Analysis and Design for Nature Play and Learning, a one-credit course, is being offered by September 21-22. It will be taught by Virginia Sullivan, chair of Board of Conway School of Landscape Architecture and co-author of Lens on Outdoor Learning. It looks at:
• How experience in nature promotes engagement with the early childhood standards.
•Understanding the roles of the teacher, the child, and the environment.
•Using and modifying the existing landscape.
•Site assessment, analysis and schematic design as tools to study the strengths and weaknesses of your location for a nature-based early childhood program.
•Establishing boundaries, pathways, and destinations to support play and learning.
Natural History for Early Childhood, also a one-credit course, will be offered October 5-6. It will be taught by Susie Spikol Faber, outdoor education coordinator at the Harris Center for Conservation and director of their young children and parents programs.
This one-credit course will focus on learning the natural history of northern New England that most directly relates to being outdoors with children. Participants will learn the flora, fauna, and natural phenomena and skills that effectively engage young children. Some of the topics: fire-building, basket-making, nature art, tracking, children’s literature as a vehicle to nature exploration, and wild edibles.

These courses are part of a series of programs on nature-based early childhood education at AUNE. The programs aim to give educators information and hands-on experience with nature preschools and forest kindergartens, which have uniquely different approach to education from conventional indoor early-childhood centers.
