Travel Grants Announced for Northeast Climate Change Preparedness Conference

The LOCAL SOLUTIONS: Northeast Climate Change Preparedness Conference is offering travel grants to municipal officials from New Hampshire and Vermont to facilitate access to the event. See details by clicking on the links below, and apply now in order to meet the application deadlines.

Was your municipality affected by Hurricane Irene? Are coastal storm surges and river floods eroding infrastructure? We have resources to help you build a more resilient community and learn from peers at the May 2014 event.

We are offering twelve travel grants for teams from New Hampshire municipalities to participate in the conference, through a generous grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation (NHCF). Members of the Vermont League of Cities and Towns (VLCT) can apply for Property and Casualty Intermunicipal Fund (PACIF) scholarships to support conference participation.

  •  VERMONT ; For members of VLCT, grant application and guidelines are available at PACIF Scholarships, or visit http://www.antiochne.edu/innovation/climate-change-preparedness/travel-grants/.  Applications must be submitted by April 4.
  •  NEW HAMPSHIRE ; For any New Hampshire municipality, officials can apply for travel grants of up to $375. Preference is given to teams with at least one municipal employee, such as town manager or public works personnel, and at least one elected or appointed municipal decision-maker, such as mayor or selectboard member. Twelve grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The NHCF Grant Application and guidelines are available here, or visit http://www.antiochne.edu/innovation/climate-change-preparedness/travel-grants/.  The application deadline is February 26.

About the Conference: LOCAL SOLUTIONS will be hosted by Antioch University New England and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on May 19-21, 2014, in Manchester, New Hampshire. This regional conference is designed for local planners and decision-makers to understand how to create healthy, resilient communities that are better prepared to handle severe weather and climate impacts. The third day’s track is specific to fostering preparedness linkages between schools and communities.

This pragmatic, hands-on, and interactive event offers workshops on how to:

  • Conduct vulnerability assessments;
  • Protect natural and societal mechanisms that maintain resilience;
  • Frame and create plans that allow a community to adapt;
  • Build community support to implement adaptive responses;
  • Effectively use the government in responding to climate change;
  • Network with schools, community planners and leaders working toward solving similar problems.

For more information about travel grants: Email Joanna Wozniak at jwozniak@antioch.edu.

To participate: Register now for LOCAL SOLUTIONS. Early-bird pricing is available until March 1, 2014.
