Jahdiel Torres-CabÃ¡ Will Receive Ginsberg-Wessels Scholarship
The Department of Environmental Studies will present the 2014 William R. Ginsberg and Thomas K. Wessels Environmental Studies Scholarship Award to Jahdiel Torres-CabÃ¡, a master’s student in the Conservation Biology concentration, on Friday, May 16, at the department’s Celebration of Accomplishments ceremony.
The scholarship, the highest award given by the faculty of the Department of Environmental Studies to one of its students, goes to a student who has displayed academic excellence and environmental leadership.
About Jahdiel Torres-CabÃ¡
Torres-CabÃ¡, a Conservation Biology student, has demonstrated strong leadership skills internationally, nationally, and on campus. He was an executive committee board member of the Sierra Student Coalition and co-chair of the International Working Group representing the United States and its territories at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Warsaw, Poland, in December 2013. He was a representative to the same convention when it met in Doha, Qatar, in 2012.
In February, Torres-CabÃ¡ helped organize a group of AUNE students attending the Keystone XL Pipeline rally at the White House in Washington, D.C.
He is co-chair of the Environmental Studies’ Student Alliance and an active member of the Center for Tropical Ecology and Conservation, for which he organized the second cultural competency workshop last November. He also led a group of five students from the Advocacy for Social Justice and Sustainability program developing the first anti-oppression training at AUNE.
Torres-CabÃ¡ was given the Presidents’ Leadership Award by the Campus Compact of New Hampshire in 2013.
