Wellness for Helping Professionals: Maintaining Hope and Optimism in Chaotic Times

About the workshop:

While there are many intrinsic rewards as a result of helping those who have been faced with traumatizing events, listening to stories of trauma may have negative effects on those serving in helping capacities. The emotional costs of caring for clients with histories of trauma can besignificant, both on helpers themselves and those around them. Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) refers to those physical, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional reactions experienced by clinicians as a natural byproduct of working with those who have experienced trauma.

This workshop, sponsored by Antioch’s Wellness Institute will provide participants with the most current information on the neuroscience of secondary traumatic stress, in addition to evidence-based models and practices to increase resiliency to STS. An important component of the workshop is facilitated dialogue bringing together various members of the helping professions personal and systemic standards of practice for creating a climate conducive to wellness. The workshop is both experiential and interaction and participants will be provided with materials to develop their own wellness plans.

This workshop is geared toward counselors or clinicians currently working in the mental health field, but is also relevant for case managers, social workers, students, or others in a helping profession.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:

– Understand physiology and symptoms of secondary traumatic stress.

– Understand factors that contribute to heightened stress (both primary and secondary.)

– Understand and develop individual strategies to address secondary traumatic stress.

– Understand the factors contributing to wellness and develop a personal wellness plan based upon evidenced-based practices.

– Understand systemic and organization factors that contribute to wellness.

– Incorporate creative and accessible strategies to maintain hope and optimism.

About the Faculty:

Cathy Lounsbury, Ed.D., LCPC is a seasoned counselor, educator, and leader in the study and practice of trauma, wellness and resilience. Cathy has been a clinical mental health counselor for over 25 working with both children and adults, specializing in those who have experienced trauma.

Currently, Cathy serves as an Associate Professor in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program of Antioch University New England, with a focus on trauma-informed treatment and clinical practice. In this role, she founded Antioch’s Institute on Wellness, providing consultation and training nationally on the mitigation of secondary traumatic stress. Within the Applied Psychology Department at Antioch, Cathy has developed training opportunities for students in trauma-informed, strength-based approaches, including an international clinical training opportunity working with children and teens in Peru.

Amy Morrison holds a Doctorate in Expressive Therapy from Lesley University. She is a Board Certified, Registered Art Therapist and Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Amy has taught in higher education for 15 years, she is an active artist and has a private practice. Amy specializes in individual therapy for adults, adolescents and children and provides family therapy with all ages. Amy’s research interests include children’s art making for health and expression, empowerment, creativity, children’s rights, healthy development and ethics. Amy has a particular clinical interest in attachment psychology, wellness and parenting, and life transitions during adulthood. Amy provides professional supervision for art therapists and clinicians working toward licensure for mental health counseling. She is an advocate for experiential, transformative learning and integrated arts pedagogy and has presented nationally and internationally on these topics. In therapy sessions and in the classroom Amy creates a warm, nurturing, responsive environment where people feel listened to and leave with practical skills to improve their life situation.

Devona Stalnacker-Shofner, received her Doctor of Education in Counselor Education and Supervision from Argosy UniversityAtlanta. Her dissertation research focused on wellness in graduate students as they transition to counselors-in-training and during clinical practicum. She is also a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the State of Georgia, as well as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) through the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). Devona has been in professional practice as a counselor since 2001, and her experience includes providing individual, group, and marriage and family counseling to clients presenting with treatment concerns such as depression, anxiety, and personality disorders, as well as substance abuse, chemical dependency, and recovery. Additionally, her professional experience includes work with trauma, grief, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and self-mutilation/injury.

Continuing Education from the National Board of Certified Counselors

Antioch University New England has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider. ACEP No. 4338. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Antioch University New England is solely responsible for all aspects for the programs. The 2-day program offers 11 contact hours through the National Board of Certified Counselors. Individuals must attend the entire 2-day event to qualify for continuing education.

Cancellations/Refunds
