Dynamic Equilibrium: Engaging Neurophysiological Intelligences through Embodied Approaches

This playful and informative experiential workshop explores how embodied clinical practices support and deepen sense of self, engage relational and communication skills, invite motivation, and evoke the capacity for joy. These shifts are simultaneously subjective and physiological. Participants will experience three types of movement intervention- interceptive somatic sensing, interactive dance, and authentic movement. Throughout the morning, we will consider the impact of movement experience on the neurobiological foundations of sensation, perception, memory, emotion and thought.
Antioch Clinical Faculty Kalila Homann, MA, LPC-S, BC-DMT, is a dance/movement therapist and licensed professional counselor and supervisor based in Austin, Texas. Ms. Homann has taught and supervised at the graduate and postgraduate level in dance therapy and expressive arts therapy for over 20 years, alongside an active clinical practice. Ms. Homann has taught nationally and internationally on the topic of dance/movement therapy and neurobiology. She recently received the 2018 Excellence in Education Recognition Award from the ADTA Board of Directors. Kalila is passionate about preparing and empowering dance/movement therapy students to embark on successful, innovative, and rewarding careers.
1) Participants will experience three types of interventions- interoceptive somatic sensing, interactive dance, and authentic movement and consider their impact on subjective experience and relational process.
2) Participants will consider how embodied approaches engage the mind and impact neurophysiology using four current concepts of affective neuroscience -vagal regulation, oxytocin, implicit and explicit memory, and brain lateralization.
3) Participants will be able to identify somatic perception as a clinical resource and understand the relevance mind/body approaches to working with a range of clinical populations.

9:00 – 9:15am Welcome to Embodied Neuroscience: Introduction to Concepts
- When DMT approaches are considered in light of current affective neurobiology research on vagal and biochemical regulation, memory and affective systems, and brain lateralization, new understandings begin to emerge.
9:15 – 9:30am Interoception and vagal regulation:
- We will experience the fundamentals of establishing safety and engagement through the embodied resources of gravity and breath, and through connecting with one another.
9:30 – 10:00am Structure and function of the brain
- We will consider the structure and function of the brain and branches of the nervous system, exploring and inviting the channels of information flow between the brain and the body through individual movement.
10:00 – 10:45am The Limbic System
- We will deepen connection through the limbic system, (interconnecting processes of emotion, memory, and sensation) by moving through specific DMT approaches including somatic awareness, interactive dance, and authentic movement.
10:45 – 11:00am Process and Observations:
- We will track the psychological and physiological changes that have occurred as a result of engaging in movement.
11:00 – 11:15am Break
11:15 – 11:45am Effectiveness of DMT Concepts and Interventions/Neurophysiology
- Where in the brain are we talking about? The effectiveness of DMT concepts and interventions can be understood through our neurophysiology. We take a detailed look at brain regions, neurotransmitters, and their relationship to the body.
11:45 – 12:10pm DMT Clinical Applications, Discussion, and Questions
- Dance/movement therapy methods are based on the experiential process of embodiment, and interventions are effectively employed with multiple populations across the developmental spectrum. Clinical examples will be introduced to illustrate DMT’s versatility and application to many populations. We will discuss how neuroscience can help us understand and communicate this effectiveness and range.
12:10 – 12:30pm Review of concepts we have learned through playful movement/dance.
12:30pm End of Workshop/evaluations
The workshop is free, however, registration is required. Please register by January 15th. Registrants will be sent materials before the workshop.
