Home Faculty Directory Katherine M. Clarke

Katherine Clarke joined Antioch New England in August, 2005 as Professor and Chair of Applied Psychology. She served as Vice President of Academic Affairs from 2009-2011 and returned to the faculty as department chair in the fall of 2011. She is keenly interested in leadership studies, especially in how to exercise leadership when organizations must make meaning in the face of new realities. She has many years of experience in teaching, supervising and conducting research in the spiritual dimensions of counseling and psychotherapy.

“My teaching and research has centered on meaning-making, especially the re-making of meaning. When individuals or organizations are hit with an event that shatters their cherished beliefs, their central task is to incorporate this experience into a new world view. To me, the most important work counselors or therapists can do is to facilitate meaning-making. It is the core of personal resilience and essential to thriving human systems.”

Dr. Clarke was Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty at Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center in San Francisco, CA from 2002-2005. She was Vice President of Finance and Administration (2000-02), Chair, Pastoral Studies Department (1997-2000) and Associate Professor of Psychology and Pastoral Counseling (1992-2002) at Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Cambridge, MA. Before that she was Director of the St. Paul University Counseling Center (1989-92), Director of the Pastoral Counseling Program (1983-89), Associate Professor of Pastoral Studies, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at St. Paul University and Ottawa University, in Ottawa, Canada. In 1987-1988, she was a Clinical Fellow in Psychology and Religion in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, MA.
