The Antioch Bird Club (ABC) and Glover’s Ledge (GL) have partnered to install a Nocturnal Flight Call audio station at GL to record migrating birds. The student will assist with the initial set-up and continued maintenance of the new station, which includes data archiving, management, and processing audio recordings through identification software. The student will work closely with the acting ABC advisors and GL staff/FWS students to integrate the data with ongoing and future research efforts at GL, including but not limited to: annual reports, ornithology class coursework, and student theses projects. Lastly, the student will likely also assist ABC and GL in management and data processing of the Motus station at GL.
Must be a self-motivated, independent worker with a strong ability to work with a team of peers and supervisors towards a shared vision. Prior experience with ornithological or bio-acoustic research is not required, yet possessing a familiarity with birds and willingness to learn new software is preferred. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about maintaining scientific integrity and exploring broad ecological questions that the nocturnal flight data can help answer. Applicants are encouraged to think about incorporating this data into their own potential research project, and perhaps matching up this flight call data with mist-netting/capture data.
The student is required to travel to GL in Langdon, NH to set up, maintain, and download data from the unit. This position offers the potential for working some hours remotely on data collected from the unit.
There are some funds to hire a student without Federal Work Study funding for a limited number of hours, but funding through FWS is also an option.
