Honoring PsyD Alum Dr. Lamar Smith
A Message from Dr. Barbara Lipinski, Provost & CEO
It is with a heavy heart that we, the Antioch University Santa Barbara community, mourn the passing of Dr. Lamar Jerome Smith. Dr. Smith, known as Lamar when he was a student in our PsyD in Clinical Psychology program just a few years ago, led a deeply meaningful life that was an inspiration to many of us, in the true spirit of Antioch University.
He graduated with his doctoral degree in 2013 and was offered a full time position immediately after completing his doctoral internship at the Center of Excellence at the Orange County Health Care Agency. Lamar was most recently employed as a Behavioral Health Consultant and Supervisor at Genesis New Beginnings in Huntington Beach, California. At New Beginnings, he supervised mental health staff and was helping to develop an integrated medical and behavioral health services model. He also worked as a Clinical Psychologist at CHE Services in Los Angeles, where he worked with multidisciplinary teams to create the best possible health outcomes.
As you can see, Lamar was dedicated to giving back to the community as well as serving marginalized groups. He was cherished for his social justice activism and commitment to serving others. He worked as an executive team member of Safe Med LA, a coalition of agencies and treatment facilities that aim to reduce the opioid epidemic in Los Angeles county. He co-led the Opioid Task Force, working to develop strategies for addressing the epidemic; he worked with Insure the Uninsured Project, a Los Angeles workgroup; he was a community partner with Eliminating Disparities and Disproportionalities Committee addressing mental health treatment to minority communities; and he consulted with the Watts Gang Task Force.
Lamar successfully modeled self-care and the oftentimes elusive work-life balance that many of us in the psychology profession aspire to. Each year he prioritized immersion into diverse cultural experiences by scheduling time to travel to foreign lands across the globe with family and friends, no doubt bringing joy and laughter to his traveling companions and those he met along the way.
