Why 21st Century Children Need Nature

Special Guests: David Sobel, Alicia Jimenez, and Aaron Barba

In this presentation, educators will convene in the multi purpose room to discuss the way time outside can support children in becoming happy healthy learners. The benefits of outdoor activity, play and a sense of place will be shared with a focus on ways parents can encourage and participate in time in nature. This presentation includes research, case studies, and stories from the Wilderness Youth Project. Simultaneous English-to-Spanish translation will be available, thanks to AUSB alumna Lena Moran and Just Communities.

About the Presenters

kids playing in natureDavid Sobel is teaching faculty at Antioch University New England. He was co-founder of the Harrisville Children’s Center in Harrisville, New Hampshire, and has served as a publicly elected school board member in both Nelson and Harrisville, New Hampshire. He has served as a staff development and science curriculum consultant to schools in New Hampshire and Vermont and has been a guest speaker and workshop leader for a variety of school and environmental organizations. He serves on the editorial board of the Holistic Education Review and is the author of Children’s Special Places and many articles on children and nature. He is currently at work on two books on developmental psychology and ecoliteracy.

Alicia Jimenez is a preschool teacher at Storyteller Children’s Center and is a current student in AUSB’s Master of Arts in Education program, concentration in Nature-Based Early Childhood Education.

Aaron Barba is a WYP counselor and recent UCSB graduate who mentors and motivates youth in underrepresented areas to strive for a better life through higher education and nature connection.
