Adjunct Faculty, BA Program
Manny Raya is a product of an immigrant mother and a native of Santa Barbara who graduated from Santa Barbara City College and the University of California, Santa Barbara. The early part of his collegiate career he fell in love not only with personal growth but also with the advancement of other people in his community. He began a non-profit organization, Homies Turf 2 Surf, a surf camp set up to offer at-risk youth a new perspective on life. He created this program in hopes that in viewing the world anew, the young participants of Homies would be able to make better life choices.
Having graduated from a local university, Manny yearned to learn more about the world and himself, through philosophic contemplation. This drive led him to pursue and attain a Masters of Philosophy at San Francisco State University. The experience at SFSU is something he holds dear to his heart. The philosophy department at SFSU didn’t just help him fine-tune his critical thinking skills; it provided him with multiple perspectives from which to analyze the world. Today, he is an adjunct faculty member here at Antioch University Santa Barbara, an instructor of Philosophy at SBCC, a coach of the award winning SBCC debate team and director of the Philosophy club.
Manny continues to share his knowledge at our local high schools and a number of other events to help spread the concept of philosophic contemplation. To this day he continues this path because he has a drive not only to better himself, but his community.
