Antioch University Seattle Forms Partnership with Children’s Institute for Learning Differences
A partnership between Antioch University Seattle (AUS) and Children’s Institute for Learning Differences (CHILD) creates an innovative special education endorsement program for teachers.
Beginning fall term, 2009, teachers may enroll in the AUS Special Education endorsement program that integrates a six-week summer internship at CHILD. The internship provides hands-on experience that fully prepares teachers for new careers in special education. Qualified special education teachers are in high demand in Washington State.
Robert Delisle, Dean of Antioch’s School of Education, says, “Our partnership with CHILD is in keeping with Antioch’s mission to train educators to serve the underserved. CHILD has a reputation for success with children who face complex learning behaviors. Antioch students can benefit from their internship experience at CHILD.”
Trina Westerlund, CHILD Executive Director, notes Antioch’s education programs have a reputation for innovation and preparing teachers who fully invest in their students. “CHILD,” Westerlund says, “is also deeply committed to quality education and has, for 32 years, provided a place where vulnerable students can feel accepted, empowered and can learn how to learn more effectively; a place that embraces the whole child with all their strengths and struggles. We are thrilled to partner with Antioch University in providing new special education teachers with this intensive, reality-based six weeks clinical experience.”
