Nirvana Co-founder and Activist Krist Novoselic to Speak at Antioch University Seattle Commencement
Antioch University Seattle’s 2014 graduation ceremony will rock as musician and voting reform activist Krist Novoselic will be the commencement speaker. Novoselic is one of the founding members of the revolutionary rock group Nirvana, and was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In addition to being a groundbreaking musician, Novoselic is also known for his political activism, which is focused primarily on reform of the electoral system. His activism started during his time with Nirvana, when he founded JAMPAC—the Joint Artists and Musicians Political Action Committee—to challenge a local teen dance ordinance in Seattle that effectively banned “all-ages” shows.
Novoselic is also the author of “Of Grunge and Government: Let’s Fix This Broken Democracy,” published in 2004, and is the chairman of the voting rights reform organization FairVote, a position he has held since 2008. FairVote’s reform positions are garnering national attention. Ranked-choice voting, a national popular vote for the office of President, and other voter reforms are receiving coverage and support from publications such as the New York Times and the Washington Post.
“We are thrilled that Krist will be addressing Antioch University’s graduating class,” said Antioch University Seattle President Dr. Brian Baird. “I’ve known Krist for almost twenty years, and the breadth of his knowledge about the history and development of voting systems is remarkable. Every time I listen to Krist, I learn something new.”
Novoselic is currently a student himself, working towards a degree. “I’m really looking forward to speaking to Antioch University’s 2014 graduates. The University’s mission aligns with my thinking when it comes to working hard to create positive change and support social justice. While I plan to leave my bass and my new favorite instrument the accordion at home, I will try to bring to the students and the guests a message of persistence and commitment. I am really looking forward to it.”
Antioch University Seattle’s 2014 Commencement Ceremony will take place on Monday, June 23, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Town Hall, 1119 8th Ave, Seattle, WA 98101.
