The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (AVCAA) serves as a key academic leader, responsible for assuring high-quality academic programs and faculty through a combination of academic assessment and program review processes and proactive faculty recruitment and retention initiatives. In addition, the AVCAA provides leadership and oversight for institutional accreditation, academic compliance, institutional effectiveness, and other related initiatives.
The AVCAA supports the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and University Provost (VCAA) in the academic administration of the Office of Academic Affairs, including management of all faculty-related matters, as well as special projects related to academic and faculty planning. In addition, this position works in a collaborative fashion with faculty and academic administrators across the University campuses and academic units to further the institution’s academic mission and support excellence in teaching and learning.
The AVCAA must possess a deep commitment to fostering academic rigor, educational access, and social justice. The position requires experience and skills in leading and serving teams and individuals who collaborate on the development, implementation, and evaluation of academic programs to meet the needs of adult learners.
The AVCAA reports to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and University Provost and serves as a member of the Council of Chief Academic Officers as well as other committees and task forces as necessary
Essential Job Functions:
- Academic Affairs Leadership (70%)
- Support the VCAA with faculty affairs, such as faculty contract renewal, promotion, and advancement review processes; coordinate annual faculty performance review process; monitor and evaluate faculty workload policy; partner with the Office Human Resources and provosts to ensure search processes support proactive and successful recruitment of a diverse and inclusive faculty.
- Oversee the promotion of a culture of inquiry and evidence-based teaching, learning, and outcome assessment practices in academic programs through supervision of the assigned academic assessment faculty coordinator.
- Oversee all academic administrative operations and processes regarding institutional compliance with university, state, accreditation, and federal academic policies and regulations, including required disclosures, reporting, and site visit preparation through supervision of the Director of Accreditation and Academic Compliance. Support the University’s strategic academic plan and institutional growth initiatives by overseeing the securing and maintenance of authorization to operate in targeted states, districts, and U.S. territories. Serve as the Accreditation Liaison Officer with regional accreditors.
- Oversee the University Office of Institutional Effectiveness through supervision of the Director of Institutional Effectiveness, including the development and monitoring of student success metrics and associated institutional strategies.
- Oversee the management and evaluation of the Antioch University Library System. Convene the Library Directors University Resource Group and provide leadership in development and implementation of policies, practices and strategic plans for library functions. Work with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success to assure quality support of students and faculty.
- Coordinate the University’s Faculty Grievance Committee (FGC) membership elections, chair selection, and member training; support the FGC chair in terms of process and document archiving.
- With the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success, establish and co-lead a Persistence and Completion Task Force to establish persistence and completion goals and assure appropriate retention mechanisms are in place to support goal achievement.
- Manage the AU International Study and Domestic Field Studies (ISDFS) processes, including policy and procedures implementation, training, and documentation. Staff the 24/7 phone line for all travel emergencies and coordinate with the Office of University Counsel for risk management.
- Lead the development and implementation of the University’s continuing education system. Collaborate with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Program Development and provosts on continuing education programming, staffing, and training needs.
- Convene the University-wide IRB and convene or serve with other academic-focused work groups and tasks at Vice Chancellor’s request.
- Academic Administration (30%)
- Establish and maintain documentation and archiving systems for academic, compliance, accreditation, and academic administrative work products.
- Support the VCAA through the management of special projects related to academic and faculty planning.
- Coordinate the development, review, and revision of academic and faculty-related University policies and procedures.
- Support the VCAA through the management of the Council of Chief Academic Officers meeting agendas and materials preparation.
- Support the VCAA in the development, implementation, and monitoring of assigned areas of the Office of Academic Affairs budget.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Doctorate in one’s field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education required. A doctorate in a field related to the academic strengths of Antioch University preferred
- Eight years of experience in higher education academic affairs administration (in accreditation, institutional research, faculty affairs, program development, academic strategic planning, etc.), with progressively responsible positions as follows:
- Four full-time years (or equivalent) of successful higher education academic affairs administrative experience in an accredited institution of higher learning at the chair level or above required
- Experience with faculty affairs required
- Experience developing metrics for assessing and enhancing strategic and assessment planning to augment student success and educational effectiveness required
- Three years of successful teaching experience required
- Experience in institutions with adult and nontraditional students required
- Experience in an institution offering academic programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level required
- Experience in multi-location, non-traditional, learner-centered, higher educational environments strongly preferred

- Extensive knowledge of faculty employment planning and processes
- Extensive knowledge of program development and academic assessment strategies to ensure high-quality educational experiences for adult learners.
- Knowledge of regional and professional accreditation
- Knowledge of data analysis and reporting best practices associated with internal and external reports, to entities such as IPEDS, NCES, and regional accreditors.
- Demonstrated capacity to utilize data in support of institutional decisions
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and administrators throughout a multi-location university system
- Demonstrated ability to work with persons of ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to support the ongoing development of competent employees by providing orientation, training, performance coaching, mentoring, continuing education and professional development opportunities
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally required
- Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality
Hours of Employment:
This is a full-time position serving a national university. A work schedule will be established in consultation with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and University Provost.
May maintain a home office or have an office at one of the Antioch University campuses. Specific location will be established in consultation with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and University Provost.
While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit, stand, use hands and fingers, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Requires daily use of computer and other standard office equipment.
