A teaching faculty position is open at Antioch University Seattle in the Center for Teaching and Learning. AUS faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The successful applicant will teach writing courses across the undergraduate and graduate programs at AUS, and will also support the CTL as Assistant Director. Applicants must have experience with teaching and working in a technology-assisted hybrid/online format and be willing to collaborate in virtual environments. This position is full-time (100% FTE), with a 12-month service period, including 3 months of professional leave after the first year. This position is within the bargaining unit represented by SEIU 925. Teaching faculty work with one-year renewable contracts. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2019; Fall Quarter begins September 30, 2019.
The AUS Center for Teaching and Learning is the heart of the campus’s academic writing program. The CTL contains the Writing Lab (the on-campus writing center staffed by graduate Peer Writing Consultants) and offers courses in academic writing across the spectrum of AUS programs. The CTL also provides faculty pedagogical development support and training to our colleagues in other AUS programs. AUS students are mainly in graduate programs for psychology and education, and the campus also offers a bachelor’s completion program as well as a Doctor of Clinical Psychology degree. All these programs are writing-intensive, which reflects Antioch University’s ethos as an institution more focused on reflective practice than test-taking. Writing Across the Disciplines is a cornerstone of our approach to curriculum development, instruction, and collaboration.
This position has a dual nature: first, as a faculty member, and second, as an administrator. In their faculty role, the successful applicant will teach undergraduate courses such as Writing Prior Learning and Inquiry and Research; graduate courses such as Writing in Psychology and Writing in Education; and dissertation- or thesis-specific course series including Writing the Dissertation Proposal, Writing Literature Reviews, and Writing the Inquiry Report/Project. The faculty role includes holding regular office hours and attending regular department or campus meetings.
In their administrative role serving as the CTL Assistant Director, the successful applicant will fulfill their responsibilities of institutional citizenship in the following ways:
- Collaborate with the CTL Director and faculty in other departments regarding development of the writing curriculum and other programmatic interests
- Assist in developing and implementing workshops and instructional materials on writing skills and strategies (for students and/or faculty, on general and course-specific topics)
- Provide pedagogical support for AUS faculty through workshops, in program meetings, and/or in individual consultations
- Evaluate writing assessments from applicants of various AUS graduate programs
- Provide backup supervision of the graduate Peer Consultants in the Writing Lab
- Manage Sakai and Google Drive sites and related accounts, in coordination with the Director
- Assist the Director and Academic Affairs in developing and supporting faculty as they transition to online/hybrid courses
Successful applicants will possess a PhD in English, Rhetoric-Composition, Communication, or a related field, with a proven history of active teaching experience. In addition, an administrative history, including training and experience with supporting other teachers, is preferred. We welcome candidates who have additional professional credentials or experiences, from alternatives to academia. The ideal candidate will complement and build upon existing strengths within the Center for Teaching and Learning, and will be eager to interact with a dedicated, cross-disciplinary community at AUS.
