Endorsement in K-12 Library Media

School Library Media Endorsement

School libraries are at the crossroads of curricular disruption, political conflict, and educational equity. Our endorsement in K-12 Library Media is designed for teachers who are fiercely protective of intellectual freedom and the right to read. In our fully online program,  you’ll build the skills you need to be a school leader working towards a schoolwide culture of innovation, equity, and inquiry.

Listen to Program Director (and alum!) Dr. Keely Nudo talk about the importance of strong school libraries.

Program Overview

Antioch University’s Endorsement in K-12 Library Media is a Washington state-approved, standards-based endorsement that can be added to an existing Washington state or reciprocal state teaching certificate or the MEd in Teaching & Learning

The program consists of seven (7) graduate courses offered every 7 weeks, so the endorsement can be completed in as little as one year (with summers) or at your own pace. Courses are completely online with synchronous virtual meetings offered via Zoom and Antioch’s online learning platform. Field experiences and practicum are built into the curriculum through our courses and can be completed in your current role or at an alternate school library site. Assignments are designed to be practical and readily translate into practice in the library media center.

The Antioch University coursework seamlessly blends research and theory with best practices and practical experience in the school library while embedding the principles of leadership, social justice, equity, and inclusion throughout the program.

“I came to Antioch already holding my MLIS, and the Library Media Endorsement program filled important gaps in my general library education with practical, school-specific coursework I could immediately put to use. I loved learning from guest speakers, including authors, illustrators, and activists, and appreciated how well the program understands the challenges school librarians face. I left feeling better equipped to run a strong library program and advocate for its value.”

Crystle A.- 2026 AlumniIn the Library Endorsement program, this is where Antioch's commitment to social justice shines most brightly. Librarian candidates need to advocate for students as they navigate building collections, designing instruction, and collaborating in learning communities. That our program requires legal issues for candidates makes it truly unique among school library programs.

Carolyn Vibbert- Senior Lecturer - School Library Media

Teaching in Antioch's Endorsement in K-12 Library Media program is one of the great joys of my professional life. I love teaching Technology Leadership, where we explore accessibility, equity, databases, ebooks, and so much more. AI in education is a huge topic right now, and keeping up with the changes is a whirlwind, but it's important work. Best of all, I get to watch my former students succeed as school librarians and connect with them as colleagues.
