Mission

The AULA Diversity Inclusion Committee is dedicated to identify, gather, discuss and recommend campus-wide initiatives that include the perspective of historically marginalized groups in our core practices such as: pedagogies, ways of knowing and curriculum development, academic partnerships and community-based collaborations, public programming and institutional position on current topics, branding and marketing, admissions, enrollment management, and student services, as well as employee searches and hiring. To counter the social ills that interfere with justice and distort our reality, we hope to work together locally and globally, toward an end to racism, classism, transphobia, ageism, heterosexism, religious intolerance, sexism, ableism, and xenophobia.

Meetings

The committee is a volunteer-based collective of alumni, students, faculty, staff, and administrators who meet once a month to follow up on active committee initiatives and discuss new possibilities.

Committee-hosted Town Hall meetings are open to the AULA community for a conversation about diversity inclusion. The schedule for these meetings is variable and shared via email.

Membership

Activity Highlights

  • Starting Winter 2020, partnered with CROSSROADS in a capacity building process for developing anti-racism resources and tools for students, staff, faculty, and community partners. This is a long-term process that will gradually inspire everyone on campus.
  • Starting Spring 2020, built a live digital repository of anti-racism materials recommended by students, staff, and faculty.
  • Supported committee members in their collaboration with faculty and students for the Black History Month program 2020 “Black is…,” and AULA’s participation in MLK Parade 2020.
  • Co-sponsored the Muslim and Queer discussion panel 2020.
  • Co-sponsored Convocation 2019-20 Indigenous Los Angeles: Roots & Relationships
  • Supported committee members in their collaboration with faculty and students for AULA’s participation in MLK Parade 2019.
  • Supported committee members in their collaboration with faculty and students for hosting Open Space 2018, with a focus on comparing the consistency AU mission statement and our academic and administrative practices.
  • Hosted on campus Todd Logan’s “Defamation: The Play” to the campus in February 2018. The play was designed as an interactive experience in which a courtroom drama unfolds–and makes the audience the jury. The photo above was taken at the event. Read more about the event here.
  • Hosted the Diversity Inclusion participatory room at the Artistic Uprising 2017.
  • Supported committee members in their collaboration with faculty and students for hosting the panel Where are the Muslim Voices? 2016
