We all have a story in our mind that shaped a part of our life and yet is still troubling to recall.
- What if we could change that story?
- What if we could create the narrative you want?
Working from our own life experience we will embark on a journey of re-creating a life narrative and transform the experience into a power stance. By using narrative fiction as a guide to rewrite the memory you will recreate the experience giving new meaning to your life story. Structuring this new narrative into fiction often aids in healing life trauma.
Using fiction in this way is often a healing exercise for both the author and reader.
Together during our 4 weeks we will explore these concepts focusing on the power language plays to bring about subtle and necessary changes supportive of this new often empowering emotional life lens.
- To change the narrative through fiction
- To discover how storytelling has powerful narrative outcomes
- Explore different ways to use language as the catalyst for change
- Have a finished narrative fiction that retells a true-life lesson
WHAT THIS CLASS WILL OFFER
Week 1: Exploring Emotional Narratives
We will start by sharing our own stories around the emotions surprise, embarrassed and fun and telling our tales to each other. This will set the stage for us to begin exploring the piece of fiction we want to create around a troubling life event. We will go over the elements to construct a narrative story and start to begin the mental process of creating the work.
Week 2: Narrative Fiction as Medicine
A first draft will be shared and your peers will respond to your work, give suggestions and help to explore any tools that would be helpful in your next draft. Additionally, we will hear and discuss authors using narrative medicine and therapy as examples. Narrative medicine and therapy are root cause approaches that are growing around our understanding of the powerful healing based around the stories we tell ourselves.
Week 3: The Power of Words
Once again, we will share our work with each other and offer insights, pose questions and overall feedback. We will also dive deeper into the true power of language to hold the key to enlightened narratives simply though word choice.
Week 4: Ta-Dah! New Narrative
Present our finished work and share with the class. We will dive further into how using fiction narrative can deliver outcomes of mental clarity and how we can further use this as a tool for self-awareness and change while producing great fiction. Group discussion will conclude with reflective feedback and insights of what we learned and where we are taking the skill set in the future.
