Promoting sustainable and just global conservation solutions
The Institute for International Conservation (IIC) at Antioch University New England promotes sustainable and just global conservation solutions.
In light of global environmental change, rapid biodiversity loss, and the exploitation of human and natural systems…
We conduct conservation research and service projects with partner organizations, unite students and professionals to grow the next generation of environmental leaders and engage AUNE and the New England community in understanding our global interdependence.
We operate in three main areas: Research, Education, and Student Support. We are actively developing programs and opportunities that will allow IIC to bring together students and professionals from a variety of disciplines to address the complex problems of conservation and sustainable use issues.
Our History
In 2001, Beth Kaplin established the Center for Tropical Ecology & Conservation at Antioch University New England. The Center for Tropical Ecology & Conservation (CTEC) was a resource Antioch New England Graduate School students, offering services and resources to aid in the development of long-term solutions to the rapid loss of biodiversity in the tropics. CTEC focused on developing connections between students, researchers and community members dedicated to the conservation of the tropics. The goal was to help facilitate the training and advancement of well-rounded environmental leaders by encouraging an understanding of ecological, political, social, and economic aspects of conservation. Over the years, CTEC accomplished many of these goals by hosting speakers, practicum opportunities, resources and symposiums.
The success of CTEC will continue within the global component brought with the new
name. In the spring of 2020, the center unveiled the new Institute for International Conservation (IIC). The change of name allows for a global opportunity to Antioch New England Graduate School students. The IIC promotes sustainable and just global conservation solutions by:
1.) Conducting conservation research and service projects with partner organizations
2.) Uniting students and professionals to grow the next generation of environmental leaders
3.) Engaging AUNE and the New England community in understanding our global interdependence.
Student Support
IIC assists Antioch University New England graduate students in finding Practicum and Internship opportunities as well as supporting funds relevant to international ecology and conservation. We also provide support with monthly student meetings during the fall and spring semesters which enable AUNE graduate students to discuss their ecological and conservation research with faculty in an informal setting. IIC supports international graduate students who wish to conduct studies through Antioch University New England. As part of that support, the IIC has compiled a list of student resources that include, but are not limited to external scholarships, grants, internships, housing, health services and transportation.
