MFA in Creative Writing

  • BA UC Berkeley
  • MFA Mills college

The MFA program offers a writer the chance to form a writing life, build a cohort, and establish a cadence and tone for one’s writing discipline and community. It is my responsibility as a professor to facilitate knowledge by creating a safe space in which students can share, question, and “fail safely” so that they feel supported throughout the learning journey and understand the value of perseverance, and ultimately thrive. My pedagogy is based on the foundation of building community and ensuring that students stay engaged through personalized learning, and most importantly, feeling seen.

Furthermore, I focus on craft over content; by doing so, MFA students find value in critique. One of my MFA  students wrote, “Sometimes, a writer might feel like they’re not getting anything out of workshop when their work isn’t being discussed, but in your mini-craft talks around others’ writing, I found that I learned something I could bring to my work, too.”
