Over the years, my teaching philosophy has evolved. I believe in today’s education sector, professors have an arsenal of tools and resources at their disposal. I am a firm believer and advocate of the multi-faceted approach to teaching and learning. I believe a professor needs to integrate whatever it takes to teach the student while maintaining a dynamic learning environment.
My teaching philosophy is fivefold. First, I want to maximize the collective intelligence of the instructor and students. I maintain a very dynamic and interactive classroom environment; everyone contributes to the learning process. I also like to share my business experiences as an entrepreneur and former Marketing Analyst, Loan Officer, and Executive Director. My classroom strikes a balance between theory and practice.
Secondly, it is important that I emphasize higher-order thinking skills, critical thinking, and real-world application of theoretical concepts. I am a strong advocate of the student-centered approach, rather than the instructor-centered approach. I have found this blending of delivery methods (lecture, video, Internet, blogs, business journals, guest speakers, etc.) to be the most effective and useful in teaching business courses. I make a strong attempt to integrate outside materials in addition to the aforementioned delivery methods. I have been very effective in applying the renowned “Case Study Method” or “Harvard Case Study Method” popularized by Harvard University’s Business and Law Schools. I have been very successful in implementing this learning method with my students.
Thirdly, my philosophy is that I try to teach my students that problems in business are very complex and you must make a decision sometimes, based on limited data, resources, and/or expertise. I have implemented this teaching method in all of my courses. I have been very successful in using the Harvard Case Study Methodology in my classes. My high student evaluation scores evidence this, and winning the 2010 won the "Student Recognition Award for Teaching Excellence" at Texas A&M University-San Antonio College of Business. I like to think that I set myself apart from my peers with this dynamic teaching style. In addition, I have published on the dynamics of the Harvard Case Study Method as a teaching methodology.
Fourthly, my goal is to develop and prepare students’ critical thinking skills for the business world. I am a strong advocate of developing business students’ critical thinking skills based on Bloom’s Taxonomy on Critical Thinking (Level I: Knowledge; Level 2: Comprehension; Level 3: Application; Level 4: Analysis; Level 5: Synthesis; and Level 6: Evaluation).
Lastly, my approach to teaching is to engage the students as much as possible. The mark of a good teacher is to have your former students come back to you and thank you for not only being a critical influence in their intellectual development, but also teaching something they had not previously encountered. My students know that I am a challenging professor, but I am also fair. I treat all of my students with the same respect and understanding. We are here to learn together and share.
Despite my extensive credentials, I still continue to learn from my students as well. I like to maximize the ambiance of collective intelligence in the classroom. I would like to think that I am preparing critical thinkers and future scholars.
