Dr. Douglas Sadownick is the founding Director of the LGBT Specialization in Clinical Psychology, founded in 2005. He is the founding Director of Colors LGBTQ Youth Counseling Center, founded in 2011. He is also a founding member of the Institute for Contemporary Uranian Psychoanalysis, the first psychoanalytical institute in the world devoted to deepening homosexual personhood. He has been in private practice in Hollywood for 15 years, specializing in psychodynamic/depth therapy with a gay-centered, multicultural and feminist approach. He is an award-winning author of two books: Sacred Lips of the Bronx (St. Martins, 1994) and Sex Between Men: An Intimate History of the Sex Lives of Gay Men, Postwar to Present (Harper San Francisco, 1996), and many articles on gay-affirmative psychology, including in the Gay and Lesbian Review Worldwide. In the 1990s, he was a full-time journalist on gay and art issues for the L.A. Weekly, Advocate, and L.A. Times. His 2006 doctoral dissertation at Pacifica Graduate Institute focused on illustrating why it is relevant today to see 19th century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche as a gay person writing in a gay way about modern psychology. He has completed work on a forthcoming work with other gay-centered psychological activist co-authors entitled Lavender Self-Awakening.
