Frequent contact between students and instructor – students need to receive feedback soon after their work has been submitted. Instructor should check e-mail and acknowledge student inquiries and submitted work within 24-36 hours if sent electronically, or graded and returned on the next class meeting.

Fostering cooperation and collaboration among students – the learning environment is enhanced when the majority of students participate in course discussions, allowing the students to help educate each other. Instructor should encourage and facilitate a robust ongoing discussion during class meetings, and one of the most effective methods is small group discussions.

Use a variety of instructional materials to keep students engaged – experiential learning works best with adult students, especially when they can apply what they learn. Therefore, emphasis on case studies is recommended. In addition, the utilization of video, multimedia, and Webinars should be used when appropriate.

Keep the class on schedule – students need to have deadlines clearly communicated, and the instructor needs to keep each lesson to the time allotted by the syllabus.

Set clear expectations for students – clearly communicate the grading expectations for students, and help them “stretch” their abilities using the course assignments and exams.

First impressions last – do everything you can to set a great first impression with each student. The more confident and comfortable they are with the instructor at the beginning, the smoother the class will go for the academic term.

Make assessment ongoing, not episodic – every student can have a bad day or bad assignment. Grade students on the overall effort, and if one assignment is an anomaly, don’t let it adversely effect the students overall performance.

Give students a sense of closure – at the end of the last lesson, do a summary recap of the class, thank the students for their participation, and provide resources for continued learning in the topic of the course.

Be a resource even after the course ends – Instructor should be willing to serve as a resource for former students who may have a question they need help on. While this may take extra time, by taking this extra initiative the instructor further serves the educational community.
